Overcoming Loads

Airconditioner

The Surbo overcomes engine loads like the airconditioner. With the Surbo, the aircon load becomes less of a problem due to the power assistance. The low rpm power of the Surbo helps, as that is the region most weak vehicles are stuck in. Once the Surbo overcomes the load of the aircon, it can just power away up the revs, allowing gearchanges upwards and build up speed, at which the aircon is less of a problem.

Apparently, the aircon got colder too!

Passengers Or Cargo

The Surbo helps you carry more people or cargo, and in fact, use their mass. If their weight is moderate, you can just use the low rpm power band of the Surbo in a high gear, but if it is drastic like for commercial vehicles, you can shift into low gear and get the high rpm power to pull away neatly (power=torque times rpm). At the moment when the Surbo is activated (accelerator held still or slightly released), the total mass of the vehicle plus the cargo will still be moving forward, and that gives the engine a push from behind, through the gear gap.
The strength of the Surbo
comes from synchronising

The Surbo makes a compressive air vortex
(normally the engine is pulling the vehicle body through the gear. This is actually the reverse of engine braking, so we can say the Surbo is engine-brake assisted. More details on How It Works ). As long as it's possible to pull this total mass along for a first time, typically in the lowest gear, or when you downshift, this mass momentum can be used, so increasing speed should not be a problem. Thus, we have very satisfied commercial vehicle customers who carry lots of cargo.

Wind Resistance

Fact: engine power that is required to overcome wind resistance rises as a cube of the vehicle's speed. If your car happens to be a tall one, such as an MPV, van or half-height crossover, the barn-door type of aerodynamics make it even harder for you to slice through the wind. What is more, at cruising speeds, top gear is usually selected, and as acceleration power from such a high gear ratio is usually little, your vehicle can have a hard time picking up indeed. Wind may also be the reason why the fuel economy of your vehicle may not be much better when you are speeding on expressways than if you are going at a lower speed on a back road.

Fortunately, the Surbo is able to raise the torque of your engine throughout the rpm range, maximizing it in the mid band and peaking at around 3300 rpm, where in top gear you might be running at 100 to 120 kph, depending on the gear ratio. You will not need to keep to 90 kph where the normal maximum fuel economy is for most vehicles (look at any new car brochure and you will see that the fuel economy at 120 kph is worse than at 90 kph). Since the Surbo gives more power at any rpm compared to the original engine, at whatever speed you drive there will be an edge. As the Surbo's power comes with just part throttle even at high speeds, most of the vacuum of the engine is preserved for further air suction into the engine, thus lending more flexibility to the engine.

Consider also the following: wind resistance occurs also internally inside an engine. Other than friction forces, an operating engine has pumping losses, which is the work required to move air into and out of the cylinders. This pumping loss is minimal at low speed, but increases roughly as the square of the speed, until at rated power an engine is using about 20% of total power it produces to overcome friction and pumping losses. The Surbo's increased air pressure helps to mitigate this circumstance, and perhaps that is why cars equipped with Surbos typically have an increase in top speed by up to 30 kph.

Latest news: a Twin Surbo-fitted Hyundai Matrix 1.6 (automatic) owner from Singapore reported achieving more than 210 kph using just three quarters of the throttle. The original top speed was just 180 kph, and in his words the car was not supposed to go to such a high speed. This is in spite of the car's very tall MPV-like stance; previously there were reports of 1.6 litre saloon cars fitted with Surbo that also managed another 30 kph where gearing and the rpm limit allowed. This result shows that the Surbo can indeed help even tall vehicles beat the wind.

So try the Surbo today, and gain the freedom to drive at a higher speed where legal.
