How To Reduce Diesel Smoke

The way to reduce diesel smoke is simply to press less on the accelerator, yet gain engine torque. Diesel smoke can often come from driving habits. Many drivers will start off in 2nd gear, because they feel that first gear is too short, and often change up to the next gear around 2000 rpm, which may be too soon because the next gear starts at a lower rpm, where the engine may not have developed its full torque. Some drivers think that revving high may be bad for the engine, but they do not realize that diesel engines are stronger than petrol engines, which operate at higher rpm all the time. In fact, diesel engines can go hundreds of thousands of miles without repair, so letting them rev higher to get more speed and reduce smoke is quite all right.
